Proving your U.S. benefit income to an Egyptian bank, court or residence office, or settling an estate in Egypt, often requires a Social Security document legalized for Egypt. The Arab American Chamber of Commerce takes your certified SSA letter to the U.S. Department of State and the Embassy of Egypt.
Certified SSA letter needed. It goes to the U.S. Department of State, then the Embassy of Egypt. Online printouts without an SSA certification usually can’t be authenticated. No apostille for Egypt.
Many Americans and Egyptian-Americans draw U.S. Social Security benefits while living in Egypt, or need to show those benefits to an Egyptian bank, landlord, court or government office. Others need an SSA record to settle a family or estate matter. In each case, an Egyptian office will normally only rely on the document once it has been legalized for Egypt, which starts with getting the right version from the Social Security Administration.
The most common document is the benefit verification letter, which states the monthly benefit and is used as proof of regular income. Retirees applying to live in Egypt, opening accounts with Egyptian banks or renting property may be asked for it. Egyptian family courts sometimes ask for proof of a parent’s income in maintenance cases. Statements of earnings, proof that a benefit has stopped, or records connected with a deceased person’s benefits can also be needed in inheritance and estate matters handled in Egypt.
A benefit letter printed from a personal online account is useful at home but usually cannot be authenticated, because it carries no official signature or seal. For use in Egypt, ask your local SSA office for a letter issued with an SSA official’s certification, explaining that it will be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State for use abroad. Check that the name matches your passport and that the figures are current, as Egyptian offices generally want a recent letter.
The United States has social security agreements with a number of countries that coordinate contributions for posted workers, but Egypt is not one of them. U.S. certificates of coverage therefore have no role in Egypt, and U.S. companies sending staff there should take local advice on Egyptian social insurance. Questions about whether benefits can be paid while living in Egypt are for SSA itself.
An SSA letter certified by the agency is a federal document. The Arab American Chamber of Commerce submits it to the U.S. Department of State for authentication and then to the Embassy of Egypt for legalization, with no notary or Secretary of State step. Egypt does not accept apostilles. In Egypt, the receiving office may also want authentication at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a certified Arabic translation. If SSA cannot provide a certified letter, phone us to discuss alternatives, and for current timing and fees.
