Arab patent offices, courts and licensing partners sometimes need proof of a U.S. patent: to support a filing, to prove ownership in a dispute or to back a license. The decorative “ribbon copy” the USPTO sends after grant isn’t the version to legalize. The Arab American Chamber of Commerce works with a USPTO certified copy and takes it through the federal route.
Use a USPTO certified copy. A certified copy of the patent or application, issued under the USPTO seal, is a federal document. It goes straight to the U.S. Department of State, with no notary or Secretary of State. Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Bahrain and Algeria accept the apostille. Other Arab countries add embassy legalization.
The USPTO issues a patent grant to the owner, and anyone can order certified copies of patents, applications and file histories. For use abroad, the certified copy is the document that can be authenticated, because it carries the USPTO certifying officer’s signature and seal.

Common mistakes: legalizing the ribbon copy or a printout instead of a USPTO certified copy, notarizing it, sending it to a Secretary of State, or ordering the patent when the office needed the priority application.
